Rockford Elementary School

Rockford, MN

Primary entrances to the Rockford Elementary School are punctuated by canopies that terminate in round vertical towers, labeled “Beacons of Learning” by district staff.

Inside, excitement is created in a large central commons through the use of exposed structure, indirect lighting, painted ductwork and multicolored floor patterns.  At the entrances to individual “houses” accommodating different grade levels, multipurpose spaces are enclosed in gabled structures with wood lattice overhangs.  Wood benches outside of the “houses” accommodate informal gathering.  Large insulated skylights bring natural light deep into each wing of the building.
